Erasmo Castellani is doctoral candidate in Early Modern history at Duke University. He earned his laura triennale and magistrale (equivalent to a B.A. and an M.A.) in History from Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice, the latter summa cum laude. His prior experience includes work on legal anthropology, practices of governance, and political communication in Venice and its territories between the 16th and the 19th centuries through extensive archival research in Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Slovenia. Between 2009 and 2013 he collaborated on the “Shared Culture” project, collecting archival material on the Istrian peninsula (1500–1700) and organizing its database. He is currently working on the Venice Interactive Visual Atlas (VIVA) project, focusing on professional, national, and devotional confraternities.
